Do you ever wonder if you are making a difference?

Giving Tuesday is a time to get excited, a time to share, a time to feel like you are participating in something bigger.

If you have ever questioned if you have the power to make a difference with a donation to Seed Savers Exchange, even a donation of $25, I’m here to tell you the answer is YES.

Seed Savers Exchange is a non-profit dedicated to saving and sharing America’s heirloom seeds, but it is also an organization that connects an amazing group of heirloom gardeners.  Our last two blog posts introduced you to a few of them, you can get to know Lori here, and Marilyn and Chris here.

I personally had the pleasure of meeting many of the 300+ attendees of last summer's Conference & Campout.  Anyone walking through the hot and humid parking area last July could have noticed that the dusty license plates were not by a majority from our local state of Iowa, or even limited to the Midwest.

Seed Savers Exchange members traveled from all corners of the country and beyond to visit Heritage Farm and spend a weekend learning about growing heirlooms, saving seeds, and finding fellowship with a community of people who care about saving heirloom seeds and plants for the future.

Being new to Seed Savers Exchange in 2015 I was curious, and shameless, asking complete strangers to share their stories with me.  As I mingled through the crowd throughout the weekend responses varied greatly...

I grow over one hundred varieties of tomatoes.

I’ve spent the past thirty years collecting garlic.

I started a seed library in my community back home.

I’m not a gardener, but I want to learn about growing heirlooms.

I learned about Seed Savers Exchange at a conference 20 years ago, and for the first time I felt like I was with “my people”.

The most beautiful thing to me was that this kaleidoscope of people varying in age from 3 months to 93 years, local and international members, first time growers and master gardeners, all gathered in the arms of one organization that cares about the same thing, saving heirloom seeds and getting those seeds growing in gardens everywhere.

Your donation of $25 or more makes a difference.  Your gift helps preserve rare heirloom seeds, gets them growing in backyard gardens everywhere, and connects a community of gardeners at every age and stage.

During this season of giving, donate to Seed Savers Exchange.

Your donation of $25 or more makes you a member.
